Hello there, and welcome to my blog! Let me take a second to introduce myself.
I’m Allison Miller, a senior at The University of Texas, majoring in marketing and public relations. Proud to be born and raised in the sweatiest, fattest city in the US: Houston, Texas. I consider myself student by day and aspiring socialite/fashionista by night. I balance these two busy lifestyles by obsessive list-making and verbalizing my plans to those around me–broken down by the hour, the minute. To me, buying a planner is like buying a new car. I research, test, browse, get user reviews from fellow plannies, and visit different stores/sites before making a purchase decision. It’s therapeutic…and odd to others (not unreasonably so). I realize this.
A few of my interests include choreographed dances, Diet Dr. Pepper, Lebron James, Texas Sports, artwork by Peter Max, weird furniture, traveling, trashy reality television, books on religion, Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen (actually, just Mary Kate, the twisted one), sushi, trampolines, designer clothing, cheerleading on ESPN (yes, it’s a sport people), New York and, of course, my wonderful family. Oh, and on a side note, I will probably think less of you if you wear black Nike shox. Sorry, I can’t help it.
Previously, I’ve held positions and internships that have given me real-life exposure to the public relations field. Last year, I was Vice President of PR for my sorority, Kappa Alpha Theta, which challenged me to discover new and exciting ways to encourage the Austin community, UT students, and Theta alums to get involved with the various events our sorority sponsors each year. Last summer I also interned with The Greater Houston Convention and Visitors Bureau and DataCert in the PR and Marketing departments. In these positions I was able to work alongside the Sr. Product Marketing Manager and the PR Director to write multiple press releases, create a social media presentation, submit industry awards and develop strategic messaging for the DataCert brand and the city of Houston.
Although my heart still belongs to New York, I recently accepted a job in Chicago. Nonetheless, I’m ecstatic! My hope is to create a blog when I move there so that everyone can still feel like they’re a part of my life and can be in the “know.” In order to be an active member in the blogosphere, I need to get into the swing of things. This is a start.
With this blog, I intend to take a look at the music industry from a publicist’s point of view. Essentially, this is an assignment for my PR in Entertainment class, but I’m going to pretend it’s not (if that makes sense?). I’ve only blogged once before for another class, but I definitely do NOT have the hang of this whole thing. Oh, and another thing…I love to write but have awful grammar. A weakness I will attempt to conquer during the course of this assignment and class.
So, I think I’ve exhausted just about everything you’d want to know about me for now and probably most things you don’t want to know about me, but if there’s anything else, just ask…
